10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse

So I started a cleanse yesterday.

The sun is warm and shining, all the windows in my house are open, birds chirping, bees buzzing and I’m realizing it’s all of a sudden dress and shorts weather. I am not prepared. I don’t really know what has happened to my body under all the layers of sweatshirts and pants this winter. All I know is it’s time to kick my butt back into gear. So yesterday I started a fabulous cleanse and started a new workout routine, a hybrid of two if my favorite Beachbody programs; Les Mills Combat and Body Beast.

The cleanse is JJ Smith’s 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse. *Lose up to 15 pounds in 10 days* That will get anyone’s attention. I am not even sure where I got this book, or how long ago it was but I have finally got around to doing it. This cleanse is really just kick starting yourself into a healthier lifestyle. You are not by any means starving yourself…even though I would kill for a slice of buttery garlic bread and a Snickers bar…just stay strong, just stay strong, STAY STRONG!

The book is really great, it lays absolutely everything out for you; schedules, modified cleanses, grocery lists, more ways to enhance your cleanse, FAQ’s, etc. You have your 10 recipes that you use for the 10 days, then at the end of the book there are 100 more recipes categorized for different personal needs and goals. Needless to say LOTS of green smoothie recipes.

Here are some things I realized you should do and not do while on a cleanse.

  1. Don’t look up any recipes for anything, like at all. Everything looks good.
  2. It’s probably best to just not browse the internet at all (HA), especially if you are a foodie, you don’t realize you gravitate to all your favorite food sites by habit, or maybe that’s just me.
  3. Try to keep busy and not sit around.
  4. Drink so much water and tea.
  5. Make sure you have plenty of “approved snacks”.
  6. Just make sure your partner isn’t a meanie about eating all the good(bad) food in front of you, FOR EXAMPLE: Sitting down next to you on the couch and eating a Snickers bar. (Just one bite of a Snickers bar, it’s all I ask).
  7. Don’t make your workouts too strenuous. Listen to your body.

I am writing this post and the next few about this cleanse because I really just want to share my experience, some smoothie recipes, and drop some knowledge about me!

Sunday I went and did my shopping for the first 5 days. She gives you 2 grocery lists, one for the first 5 days then one for the second 5 days. When I got home instead of having all of my ingredients in separate containers prepped in the fridge, I went ahead and prepped everything and put almost all of the ingredients for each smoothie in its own individual bag in the freezer. Taking that extra step really does make things more efficient in the morning when you do not have as much time. You just take your bag out of the freezer, dump it into your blender, add water, ground flax seeds, and a scoop of plant-based protein powder (if you want), blend and you are good to go! The one large smoothie is then separated into 3 smaller jars or containers, and will be your smoothies for the day. It doesn’t sound like much, but I promise it is. You can also add additional water and greens if you would like.

5 day smoothie prep

The basics to this cleanse are simple:

  1. Drink smoothies. You drink three green smoothies a day, each smoothie should contain 12-16 ounces of liquid.
  2. Eat snacks. You can snack on apples, celery, carrots, cucumbers, and other crunchy veggies. other high protein snacks include unsweetened peanut butter, hard-boiled eggs, and raw unsalted nuts and seeds (only a handful). It’s all about moderation people.
  3. Drink lots of water and detox/herbal tea.
  4. Keep bowels moving. We don’t want to talk about poo really, so we won’t. But it is a part of cleansing.
  5. Do not eat refined sugar, meat, milk, cheese, liquor, beer, coffee, sodas, processed foods, and refined carbs.

That’s it. For 10 days. Totally doable.

Monday 3/14 Day 1: Berry Green

  • 3 handfuls spinach
  • 2 cups water, plus more if needed.
  • 1 apple
  • 1 cup frozen mango
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 handful seedless grapes
  • 2 tablespoons ground flax seeds
  • OPTIONAL: 1 scoop plant-based protein powder and stevia.

Tuesday 3/15 Day 2: Apple Strawberry

  • 2 handfuls springs mix greens
  • 2 cups water, plus more if needed
  • 1 banana
  • 2 apples
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen strawberries
  • 2 tablespoons ground flax seeds
  • OPTIONAL: 1 scoop plant-based protein powder and stevia.

Wednesday 3/16 Day 3: Apple Berry

  • 1 handful spring mix greens
  • 2 handfuls spinach
  • 2 cups water, plus more if needed
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen blueberries
  • 1 banana
  • 1 apple
  • 2 tablespoons ground flax seeds
  • OPTIONAL: 1scoop plant-based protein powder and stevia.

For all of these smoothies the directions are the same. Place leafy greens into blender and blend until mixture is a green juice-like consistency. Stop blender and add remaining ingredients. Blend until creamy. Add more water if needed.

If using a smaller blender like a NutriBullet you will have to blend your smoothie in a few batches. No biggie, it’s what I do.

SO! there ya go, the first 3 days to the 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse. Tomorrow is day 3 and I hope it goes as well as days 1 and 2. Let me know if you have done this cleanse before, or if you have any questions about it, I just barely scratched the surface.

Here’s dinner.

xoxo – Rachael
